Today’s article, “Introduction to Computer Hardware,” may seem  very basic, but as you know, we always  strive to build a strong foundation with clear and easy explanations, coupled with quizzes and practical tutorials. Without any further ado, let’s formally define computer hardware in simple words.

Computer Hardware

Computer hardware refers to the physical components of a computer that can be touched. System unit, monitor, keyboard, mouse, storage device, printer, scanner, etc., are all examples of computer hardware. Computer hardware facilitates the software to be executed

Types of Computer Hardware

The computer hardware is further divided into:

1. Input devices

2. Output devices

1. Input Devices

Input devices act as a bridge between user and computer. The user employs them to communicate with a computer. These devices accept input data from an external source and convert it into machine language before sending it to the processing unit.

Keyboard, mouse, scanner, trackball, digital camera, microphone, joystick, light pen are all input devices.

2. Output Devices

Output devices are those devices through which output (result) is provided in a soft copy or hard copy. The output displayed on a display screen is called soft copy, while a printed page of a document is referred to as hard copy. The output can also be in the form of sound produced by speakers.

Conclusion

To sum up, computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer that can be touched. It is divided into two major categories: input devices and output devices.

Input devices accept data from the external world and make it usable for the computer, while output devices provide the result (the processed input) in either soft copy (digital display) or hard copy (printed format).

Examples of input devices include a mouse, keyboard, scanner, joystick, and touch screen, while examples of output devices are an LCD/monitor (screen), printer, speaker, and plotter. Of course, many other input and output devices exist beyond this list.
